An example of a combined control and automation software approach is the system used to achieve safety of flight qualification for the 787 Dreamliner - Landing activation Hydraulic Control System. Within this system I used a Moog PROGRAMMABLE LOGIC CONTROLLER (PLC) for the PID control of the close loop system.
A PLC is an industrial computer control system that continuously monitors the state of input devices and makes decisions based upon a custom program, to control the state of devices connected as outputs.
The use of a PLC gave the required speed and accuracy necessary to effectively control the operation of the system giving a greatly enhanced control system. One of the biggest benefits of using a PLC is the ability to change and replicate the operation or process while collecting and communicating vital information.
While a PLC programmed via a drag and drop interface was used for the control of the actual movement of the Hydraulic system, LabView was the software used for data analysis and control on the entire system. Within the LabView program a state machine was created to provide the required simulation of landing and take off of the aircraft.
The use of LabView allowed easy capture and display of the simulation showing the load and stress on the landing gear as the test was completed this lead to a streamlining of the validation process. Beneath the actual LabView some of the actual control elements where controlled using C++ DLLs created within CVI.
So here you can see a marriage of different control and automation software languages and packages working together to create a finale solution.
Recently I worked on a control system for a motor which again used a PID closed loop, however this PID was achieved using a electronic circuit instead of a PLC. While this was a valuable experience, I realized just how much time the use of a PLC saved in the Hydraulic system had saved.
Another useful tool in the Control and automation is that of the FPGA which has enabled a flexibility previously unknown within control systems. Its use has enabled leading aerospace companies the ability to reduce cost and development time. We have successfully used them to provide interchangeable resources to simulate a number of the expected sensors on an aircraft ECU.
